SSC Chairman unclear on Supreme Court verdict, recruitment in 3 months not feasible

The Supreme Court has canceled the appointments of over 25,000 teachers and education staff due to recruitment irregularities. The verdict, delivered on Thursday, mandates a fresh selection process where all affected individuals must requalify. Many dismissed teachers will also be required to return their salaries. However, the School Service Commission (SSC) remains unclear on how to proceed with the new hiring process.

SSC Chairman Siddhartha Majumdar addressed the issue more than 24 hours after the verdict, stating that no immediate action can be taken without legal clarification. "I cannot take any action without legal clarification. I am making preliminary preparations," he said. He confirmed that SSC has held internal discussions and received official communication from the state government but awaits further legal instructions before finalizing any steps.

The timeline for the fresh recruitment process remains uncertain. While many expected the process to be completed within three months, Majumdar clarified that this is not feasible. "The verdict does not mention that recruitment must be completed in three months. The time required will depend on how many candidates apply and other procedural factors," he stated. SSC will review the matter over the weekend before making an official announcement.

A key concern is determining eligibility criteria for the new selection process. Majumdar mentioned ongoing uncertainty regarding who will be allowed to participate and whether any exemptions will be granted. "There is still some confusion about who will participate in the recruitment process and who will be given exemptions. The verdict is not yet 100% clear," he said. Until these legal and procedural matters are resolved, no concrete action can be taken.

With thousands of teachers now unemployed and waiting for clarity, the SSC continues to assess its next steps. The commission has confirmed that decisions will only be made after legal consultations, and recruitment will not be completed within the initially expected three-month period.
